Fifty leaders from the public, private, and non-profit sector gathered in Cambridge for the opening session of the NPLI’s Cohort XII. Participants explored meta-leadership through discussions, case studies, and presentations from guest speakers including US Coast Guard Commandant (ret) Thad Allen, former CBS News President Andrew Heyward, US Coast Guard Rear Admiral (ret) Mary Landry (Cohort VI), former US State Department Special Envoy to Muslim Communities Farah Pandith, and former National Counterterrorism Center Director Matt Olsen, and others.
The class also engaged in a discussion of “swarm intelligence” around the response to the Boston Marathon bombings response with Colonel Timothy Alben (Cohort V) of the Massachusetts State Police, Commissioner William Evans (Cohort X) of the Boston Police Department, former FEMA Deputy Administrator Rich Serino (Cohort I) and Medical Director of Emergency Preparedness, Brigham and Women’s Hospital Eric Goralnick.
Projects will address leadership issues related to cyber security, active shooter response, response to a prolonged grid disruption, achieving unity of effort in response, messaging in the midst of crisis, improving situational awareness with geospatial information, and infectious disease response. Watch for more details in the weeks ahead.
