NPLI Profiled for 15th Anniversary

The Harvard Gazette ran a feature story to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative: The NPLI is a joint program of the Harvard Chan School and the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School (HKS). The annual executive education program has been attended by 750 leaders from 95 organizations in more than 30 states and 10 countries. It has reached thousands more leaders through symposia…

Leadership Key to Florence Response

NPLI alumni are once again at the front lines of responses to massive storms. Hurricane Florence, described as “the storm of the century” is dumping millions of gallons of rain on the eastern seaboard and driving significant storm surges. Coastal and inland flooding is widespread. Through the media, NPLI Distinguished Senior Fellow and former FEMA Deputy Administrator Rich Serino has been noting the importance of leadership to the success of…

NPLI Alumni Present Team Project to California Emergency Services Leadership

Last month, NPLI associate director Eric McNulty joined the members of the Executive Education Program Cohort XVI in Sacramento to visit with the leadership of the California Military Department and the California Office of Emergency Services on preparing for and responding to an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) incident. The NPLI alumni were members of Team Space Weather Acute Response Measures (SWARM), the meta-leadership team that as a part of their NPLI…

NPLI Partners with a Life-Long Student of Leadership at the U.S. Air Force

In the U.S. Air Force, the evolving reality of today’s world stage demands forward-thinking and innovative leaders that continue to evolve with the pressures of their environments. Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright and the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative recently had a thought-provoking meeting at their offices in Harvard Square where they discussed Chief Wright’s passionate pursuit of leadership development and how the principles of meta-leadership…

Inter-Agency Connectivity Central to Meta-Leadership Team Projects

It’s the areas without policies and practices where leadership strategies become crucial. This is why a key part of NPLI’s Executive Education Program is the meta-leadership team project. Since our opening session in December 2017, these crisis leaders had spent the past six months back at their various agencies and roles incorporating meta-leadership into their work and team projects. Through a range of inter-agency collaboration and stakeholder analyses, Cohort XVI’s projects…

Leading through Crisis and Empowering Meta-Leaders: Lessons from Cohort XVI

Harvard's National Preparedness Leadership Initiative, Cohort XVI, June 2018

We had a remarkable culminating week with Cohort XVI from the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative Executive Education Program. More than 50 crisis leadership professionals from federal, state, and municipal agencies, international governments, as well as the private and non-profit sectors gathered in Cambridge, Mass., from June 19 to 22, for the concluding session of the NPLI meta-leadership experience. Cohort XVI included participants from the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security, Defense,…

The Challenges of Extreme Hurricanes

The extraordinary wallop from back-to-back hurricanes in 2017 tested the capacity and capability of the response system. There were many challenges as well as stories of resourcefulness, resilience, and courage from Texas to Puerto Rico. Recently, the Leadership Forum at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health convened an all-star panel to discuss what we’ve learned about extreme hurricanes that should be carried forward for future planning and training.…

Jono Anzalone Named 2017 Meta-Leader of the Year

It was a year to remember for preparedness and response leaders: hurricanes, fires, floods, shootings, and more challenged leaders and their organizations again and again. This made it a challenge to select a 2017 Meta-Leader of the Year as National Preparedness Leadership Initiative (NPLI) alumni were involved in many of these events. Each year, the Meta-Leader of the Year designation is conferred upon an outstanding leader whose breadth of thinking,…

Inaugural Master Symposium Held in DC

The National Preparedness Leadership Initiative held its first Master Symposium in Washington, DC in early November. The program, open to alumni of NPLI executive education programs, attracted approximately 50 participants for two days of discussion. Sessions included updates on the dimensions of meta-leadership (the person, the situation, and connectivity) as well as new curriculum modules on organizational transformation, developing emerging leaders and leading across the “arc of time.” NPLI faculty…

What We Can Learn From Wildfire Fighters

NPLI Director of Research Eric McNulty wrote a piece for strategy+business in May 2016 on leadership lessons for any organization that could be derived from the practices of wildfire fighters. It was timely then because of the Fort McMurray fires in Canada. It is relevant again today as we watch brave men and women put themselves in harm’s way in California. We cannot imagine a more daunting situation in which to find oneself…
