Leaders in Cohort XIV are Off and Running

A Hill ML of the YearFifty senior professionals from across the public, private, and non-profit sectors gathered in Cambridge last week for the opening session of NPLI Cohort XIV program on crisis leadership. The week began with the naming of Alice Hill (Cohort VIII, at right with Dr. Lenny Marcus) of the White House National Security Council Resilience Policy Directorate as Meta-Leader of the Year 2015 for her work with President Obama on climate change. She spoke of the importance of humility, generosity, and courage in leaders who want to be effective.

Guest speakers during the week included Matt Olsen, recently retired head of the National Counterterrorism Center; Peter Neffenger, recently appointed Administrator of the Transportation Security Administration; Andrew Heyward, former President of CBS News, former Ebola “czar” Ron Klainl; and Neil Swidey of the Boston Globe. They were joined by regular faculty members Lenny Marcus, Barry Dorn, Eric McNulty, Rich Serino, Suzet McKinney, Eric Goralnick, Robert Blendon, and Juliette Kayyem for a week that touched on the leadership challenges inherent in many threat environments. One participant described it as “,…one of the best learning experiences I have had.”

Team projects address issues ranging from multinational cooperation on crisis response in the Arctic to developing an incident command mentorship program within the NPLI network to cybersecurity education. We will keep you updated on their progress as they identify and address key leadership challenges.
